|a Edited by Antonina Klokova and Jascha Nemtsov, the volume presents essays by musicologists and historians who consider Jewish musical culture from different perspectives. The focus is on Jewish music in the European cultural context. The expression of the "sacred bridge" coined by Eric Werner, which refers to the interaction of Jewish and early Christian music, is questioned in its validity for the entire Jewish cultural history. Jewish music is not an exotic culture, but to a large extent an essential part of European music. It is treated as an open phenomenon that absorbed a variety of influences, but also gave impulses to the non-Jewish environment. In times of persecution and exclusion, however, this mutual exchange was reduced to a "one-way street". While the Jews were consistently interested in cultural transfer, their own culture was at times barely noticed. Overall, this interdisciplinary anthology offers a broad and multifaceted picture of Jewish musical culture, especially in Eastern and Central Europe in its cultural-historical context - an area that can still be described as a desideratum to a large extent. The publication thus makes an important contribution to the research and recovery of this partially lost musical culture for today's cultural life.
