Sumario:For a long time, historians were primarily interested in the development of the state in early modern Europe. Against this background, both the Holy Roman Empire and Poland-Lithuania appeared as curious exceptions, as special paths that led to a dead end. At the same time, the national master narratives blocked the view for similarities in German and Polish history. The two political entities have very rarely been compared, although the comparative method helps us to de-exoticize these states. The volume brings together contributions by experts on German and Polish history in the early modern period and opens up comparative perspectives on the history of both countries. In doing so, the authors bring to light a type of political order to which both the Holy Roman Empire and Poland-Lithuania can be attributed: the early modern European Empire. It was characterized by the prominent role of estate assemblies, by notions of liberty, republic and mixed monarchy, by a multi-layered constitutional order, a defensive military constitution, a loose integration of peripheries and spacious borders, by the limited ability of the center to siphon off resources, and by denominational plurality. With this comparison, the anthology makes an important contribution to the history of political systems in early modern Europe.
