|a The starting point of the study is the observation that a number of mythical figures undergo a transformation in art over the course of Greek Classicism. In contrast to the archaic period, they appear to be rejuvenated, since instead of an adult appearance they can now have a youthful appearance. In addition to this phenomenon of the apparent rejuvenation of gods and heroes, there is an overall increase in the number of anonymous beardless figures in the art of the classical period. The Athenians of the 5th century BC. seem to have been surrounded by a world of images in which the age group of young people dominated. Britta Özen-Kleine's work is the first to comprehensively address this much-observed phenomenon and analyzes the causes, development and social significance of this apparent 'cult of youth' in classical art. The basis for this is an in-depth study of human ages. Taking into account literary and archaeological evidence from the 6th to 4th centuries BC. the representation of the age groups and the roles assigned to them within society are worked out. This and a detailed iconographic study of the outward appearance of selected mythical figures, such as Dionysus and Heracles, as well as non-mythical figures, such as citizens and warriors, and the depiction contexts associated with them lead to a new understanding of the phenomenon of apparent rejuvenation.
