520 8 |a Adolphe Quetelet was an influential scientist whose controversial work on social physics was praised by American reformers, but condemned by John Stuart Mill and Charles Dickens. His long and distinguished career brought him into contact with many of the Victorian intellectual elite, including Goethe, Malthus, Babbage, Herschel and Faraday. His theories even helped inspire Dostoyevsky to write Crime and Punishment. Donnelly presents the first scholarly biography of Quetelet, exploring his contribution to quantitative reasoning and his place in nineteenth-century intellectual history.
