This book systematizes and integrates this large amount of information to facilitate its public understanding and its uses in prevention and treatment programs. The new advances discussed in this book explain how drug abuse modifies regions of the brain associated with pleasure and motivation. They also help to understand how their recreational use can lead to drug addiction, a chronic brain disease characterized by the compulsive use of substances with a high relapse rate. Likewise, the effects of addictive drugs at the cellular and molecular level are analyzed, which are the basis of modern pharmacological strategies for the clinical management of addicts.
