520 |a Hardly any political figure of the 9th century in China was more important than Li Deyu (787-850). As chancellor under Emperor Wuzong (ruled 840-846), he was responsible for the most severe persecution of Buddhism and other foreign religions in East Asia before the 20th century. Li was at the center of political upheavals at the time of the decline of the Tang Dynasty (618-907), such as the collapse of the Uyghur Empire, the rise of the eunuchs to power, and the endemic factionalism of officials. With this work, a monograph on Li is available in a Western language for the first time. The core of the work is a partial translation of the Notes of Failure and Grief (Qiongchou zhi), a collection of essays (lun) critical of tradition that Li wrote in the last years of his life after his demotion to the island of Hainan. The understanding of religion expressed therein is rounded off by the use of official statements by Li, who himself was ordained in the Shangqing tradition of Daoism, on religious policy. Close friends with leading literary figures of the time such as Yuan Zhen and Liu Yuxi, and a prolific author himself, Li was reduced to the role of a notorious schemer and eccentric connoisseur from the Song period (960-1279). This was mainly due to the later generation's exaggerated appreciation of Tang prose written in the old style (guwen), while Li's essays are written in the parallel style (pianwen). Thus, Tang's prose essay is put into perspective for the first time.
