|a Alexandra Eppinger's monograph offers the first comprehensive overview of the diverse manifestations of the hero/god Hercules in the years between approx. 250 and 600 AD. In its complexity, the Hercules figure is a crystallization point of religious, social, political and cultural-historical developments in late antiquity and is therefore particularly suitable for showing how pagan tradition was dealt with in the field of tension between paganism and Christianity. The entire range of ancient testimonies was included in the investigation, archaeological remains as well as coins, inscriptions, papyri and literary texts. The book offers an analysis of how Hercules was treated both in people's private lives and in the public space of late antique cities. In addition, the view of Christian and pagan writers of late antiquity on the hero is illustrated. The unanimous condemnation by the church fathers is contrasted with the religiously neutral image of the role model of virtue (exemplum virtutis), as which Hercules also served Christian emperors. The picture of Hercules from late antiquity is rounded off by a look at the last manifestations of his cult and a critical interpretation of the alleged instrumentalization of the son of Jupiter in a religio-political, anti-Christian sense in the later 4th century AD. as part of a "pagan reaction" against the Christian empire that has long been postulated in research. Awarded the Philippika Prize 2013
