Sumario:According to the ancient understanding, magic was far more than just a hodgepodge of esoteric practices and rituals that were primarily used for one's own benefit and to the detriment of others. Rather, it should include all religious acts beyond the institutionalized practice of cult. This is also shown by the twelve essays that emerged from the exhibition Egyptian Magic through the Ages, organized in spring 2011 on the occasion of the return of a long-missing Heidelberg magical book. Now expanded to include a non-Egyptian perspective, the time frame of the contributions in this volume extends from the beginnings of writing in Mesopotamia and ancient Egypt to deep into the Coptic-speaking Middle Ages. Overview articles give an impression of magic in Mesopotamia and the Middle East as well as in late Egypt. In addition, there are thematic contributions to areas in which magical means were preferred, such as protecting the grave, warding off snakes and scorpions, in the medical field and with particular energy in the pursuit of sexual goals. Egyptian and Greek papyri, but also the Coptic magical texts often associated with drawings, reveal a disquieting variety and shapes of helpful or harmful powers; magical elements in the New Testament come up as well as the broad field of number symbolism. The magica of the Heidelberg papyrus collection, which has been systematically compiled here for the first time, also shows the great role that the tradition plays for our knowledge of all of this.
