| Sumario: | In his study, Jürgen Heyde examines the communication and interdependence of Jews and non-Jews in Poland from the 14th to the 16th century. In doing so, he treads a new path, because instead of seeing these relationships as relationships between clearly defined groups, he focuses on the Jewish and non-Jewish actors and asks about the arenas in which their interaction was of particular importance. The focus is on politics, economics and administration; each of these arenas has its own modes of contact, communication, and interdependencies between actors, and different patterns emerge in each of these arenas. While the actors in the political arena acted primarily as representatives of social groups, the economic arena was dominated by the interaction between individuals who acted primarily on their own behalf. A particularly close interdependence was evident in the arena of administration, where Jewish actors exercised executive or even judicial sovereignty over non-Jews through their offices. Jewish actors appeared in all arenas as members of a functional elite and were also perceived as such by non-Jewish actors. The position within the social hierarchy did not depend primarily on the attribution "Jewish" or "non-Jewish", but on the function that the respective actors performed in the arenas as members of cross-cultural and religious elites. |
