Sumario: | Sven Osterkamp's study is the first monograph dedicated to that part of the phonographic use of Chinese characters in the ancient Japanese writing system (7th to 8th centuries) that constitutes phonograms with two-syllable or other non-monosyllabic phonetic values. From a later point of view, this is a rather atypical sub-area that has only rarely been given detailed and systematic treatment. The focus of the study is on those phonograms that derive their sound values from Chinese or Sinoxenic. In addition to the old Japanese and partly later writings, so-called "mokkan" (wooden tablets used as writing material) are used, the majority of which were only brought to light during excavations in the last few decades. The resulting considerable expansion of the corpus is now being taken into account across the board for the first time. The cases treated are systematized on the basis of the Middle Chinese sound system, and their interpretation always takes into account current reconstruction models of older Chinese. The latter in particular make it possible to break new ground with interpretation approaches for previous problem cases. The data material and its implications do not only relate to the history of Japanese writing, typology and language history: Osterkamp's study also represents a source for the historical phonology of Chinese, the verifiability of which begins well before the otherwise used Sino-Japanese.
