Sumario: | No other Mesopotamian ruler was praised as much as Šulgi of Ur (2094-2047 BC). The hymns written to his fame, of which more than 30 have survived in whole or in part, were already considered exemplary representatives of the genre in ancient Mesopotamia. Although modern research has dealt intensively with Šulgi, there are still no modern editions for many of the hymns written to him. This is especially true for those compositions which, like the hymn Šulgi F, have a length of more than 300 lines. In Šulgi F, after an extensive catalog of tasks for the Mesopotamian ruler, Šulgi is described by the city god Nanna and his journey from Ur to Nippur, on which he obtains confirmation from the high god Enlil of the ruler Šulgi he has chosen. The rest of the hymn survives only in fragments and is entirely dedicated to praising the ruler. With Volume 9 of the "Texts and Materials of the Frau Professor Hilprecht Collection of Babylonian Antiquities", the poem, which oscillates between hymn and epic, is completely edited, translated and commented on for the first time on the basis of all texts known to date. A detailed introduction also includes a fundamental research report and a synopsis of the poetry is given and dating questions as well as the "seat in life" are discussed. |
