|a The Cave Book is a large, ancient Egyptian afterlife cosmography of the 13th century BC. In a form comparable to a comic, it describes the "knowledge" of the Egyptian theologians about the underworld and the actions of the sun god who permeated it Bodies of Re and Osiris and the mystery of their regeneration. The cave book is of particular importance on several levels: while it occupies an important place in media history as an early example of a narrative sequence of text and images, and as a linguistic artifact it represents ancient evidence of the usual theological practice of imitating an older form of language (cf. Ecclesiastical Latin), as a theological work it sheds light on the intellectual history of the south-eastern Mediterranean region in the late 2nd millennium BC. Daniel A. Werning's two-volume critical edition traces the nine-century tradition of the witnesses to the text and, with the help of textual criticism, reconstructs the original text and scenes. Evidence of ancient text-archaeological undertakings and characteristics of late-period reception are also presented. Volume I also offers a comprehensive text grammar of the cave book, which presents characteristics from orthography to pragmatics. Particular attention is paid to the question of the dating and the linguistic-historical position of the text. Parallel to the transcription of the text-critically reconstructed original text, Volume II provides an understandable German translation.
