| Sumario: | Annette Herkenrath's study of wh constructions in Turkish looks at utterances in spoken Turkish that contain wh elements such as ne 'was' or kim 'who'. The aim of the study is to record the communicative, especially knowledge-organizing and discourse-structuring functions of Turkish wh-constructions and to classify them according to language typology on the basis of morpho-syntactic formal qualities. The wh-constructions are analyzed from the point of view of two linguistic theories: on the one hand syntax-theoretical (UG/minimalist), on the other hand functional-pragmatic. Even if these two theoretical approaches are considered to be difficult to relate to one another, since they take different paths in terms of the question and prima facie comparable terms such as 'topic', 'focus', 'illocution', 'subordination' or even 'discourse ' turn out to be theory-specifically ambivalent concepts at second glance, since they share an interest in modeling the syntax-pragmatic relationship. The comparison of theories thus serves to answer the question of how the relationship between discourse function and morpho-syntactic structure can be theoretically modeled and to what extent the two approaches can be viewed as alternatives to or as complementary to each other. The work is empirically based on data from the Hamburg ENDFAS/SKOBI corpus of Turkish children's and adult language, which was recorded as part of two DFG projects in Turkey, transcribed according to discourse analysis conventions (HIAT), provided with a morphological transliteration and translated according to utterance . |
