|a The Moorish literature that emerged at the end of the 16th century is still relatively unknown outside of the Western Sahara culture. With the critical edition of the Arabic manuscript of the "Kitab al-A`dad" by the Moorish historian Ahmad b. Ahbaiyib (d. 1392/1972-3) is now making available to the public a characteristic work of Moorish encyclopedic literature. The six-part adab anthology is unparalleled in world literature in terms of structure and system. It comprises exactly 100 chapters in which the author lists everything worth mentioning for each number from 1 to 100. The range of knowledge imparted in the individual numerical entries includes very different both Islamic and non-Islamic areas of knowledge. Ahmed b. Ahbaiyib, a member of the Tasumsa tribe, one of the learned Zawaya tribes, used a number of very heterogeneous sources to compile his encyclopedia. Moorish and non-Moorish Arabic works from the early days of Islam, but also medieval and even contemporary sources are evaluated. From a stylistic, aesthetic and intellectual point of view, the "Kitab al-A'dad" thus stands between Islamic tradition and colonial modernity. The edition edited by Gunhild Graf consists of two parts: while a German introduction with detailed chapters on the state of research, manuscript, author, content, sources and editing method as well as a bibliography, an index and a French summary as Part I of the opus, edited Part II the Arabic text. Four Arabic registers (proper names, place names, technical terms, titles of works) also make it easier to use.
