520 |a "Although we have gained considerable knowledge about obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders (OCSDs) and evidence-based treatments for these disorders, new research emerges at a regular rate, and much remains to be learned. Particularly interesting for the field as a whole are genetic studies and basic neuroscience and biological investigations that help us better understand brain dysfunction in OCSDs. Although exposure and response prevention remains the gold standard behavioral treatment, cognitive therapies have added another tool set for resolving symptoms in OCSDs. Nonetheless, well-trained and accessible clinicians specializing in the treatment of these disorders are hard to find, perhaps especially for children with these conditions. Various medications, mainly the serotonin reuptake inhibitors, have been well studied and have positive outcomes for OCD patients, but recovery is often incomplete. Patients with other OCSDs may benefit from a variety of medications. The editors of this volume point to areas of study that are not yet well tapped, such as behavioral inhibition and reward processing. Certainly there is much opportunity to expand our behavioral and cognitive processing treatment repertoire, as well as to search for biological interventions that improve outcomes, accessibility, and ease of application for clinicians and patients. With 17 chapters (in four parts) written by top specialists in their fields, this volume provides a solid grounding in conceptual models for understanding OCSDs"--Foreword.
