The textual notes that follow comprise alterations of hrasing, spelling, and punctuation in numerous passages undertaken by he American firm De Witt & Davenport (DD) in their 1855 edition. These include hanges of two kinds: small alterations in spelling, punctuation, and word choice o accord with American grammatical and stylistic practice; and additions and lterations apparently made by Moodie herself in the novel"--Textual notes
