Sumario:"The purpose of this book is to review all aspects of pretend play and creativity, from the point of view of both theory and research, and to illustrate how play lays the foundation for adult creativity. What is the role of pretend play in the development of creativity? What are the processes in pretend play? How do they relate to creative processes? How do the processes used in play reemerge in adult creativity? How do these processes show themselves in the creative work of the adult? For example, how is affect expression in pretend play similar to affect expression in the narrative of a story or poem? How is using blocks to represent different objects similar to generating hypotheses for scientific experiments? Is there evidence that play facilitates creativity? The first chapter in this volume, "Pretend Play and Creativity: An Overview," is an introductory one that defines pretend play and creativity and gives a general overview of processes involved in creativity and play. It presents a proposed model of pretend play and creativity. Chapter 2, "Evolutionary, Psychoanalytic, and Developmental Theories of Pretend Play and Creativity," presents theories of pretend play, from Vygotsky to Fein to Jerome and Dorothy Singer. It discusses the functions of pretend play and its role in evolution. What implications does research on animal play have for the role of play in child development and creativity? Chapter 3, "Cognitive Processes in Pretend Play and Creativity," reviews the research on cognitive processes in play and creativity. Chapter 4, "Affective Processes in Pretend Play and Creativity," reviews the research on affective processes in play and creativity. In both of these chapters, transcripts of children's pretend play that illustrate individual differences in cognitive and affective processes in play are presented. Details of the Affect in Play Scale (Russ, 1987, 2004) are also given. Chapter 5, "Case Studies in Science and Technology," compares some of the research findings in the play and creativity area with case studies of adult scientists. What processes in play are similar to those of scientists and engineers? What do they look like in adult creative expression? Examples from scientists and inventors such as Steve Jobs and Barbara McClintock are presented. The same question is asked about artists in Chapter 6, "Case Studies in the Arts." How are the processes called on by the poet Stanley Kunitz or the painter Frida Kahlo similar to what occurs in childhood play? How are processes different in the arts than in the sciences? Chapter 7, "Facilitating Pretend Play and Creativity in Training Programs," reviews the research literature that focuses on facilitating pretend play and facilitating creativity in children. Research from my own research program on play facilitation is described, with some examples of creative play. Transcripts of adult₆child interaction in play intervention studies are presented. Suggestions for enhancing creativity in play at home and in school are offered. Chapter 8, "Play, Culture, and the Modern World," first discusses play in different cultures and then reviews research findings that compare children's play in the United States and in Italy. Finally, changes in children's play skills in the United States over the past 23 years are discussed, with implications for child development. The impact of video games is also considered. Finally, in "Afterword: Converging Evidence," I summarize the major points in the volume and provide suggestions for the future. On a personal note, I have long been intrigued by the"--Book.
