Sumario: | "The field of work psychology focuses on predicting, explaining, understanding, and managing behavior in the context of organizations. This field has a long and proud history, and for the last 40 years, few have contributed more to this field than Daniel Ilgen and Neal Schmitt, both former presidents of the Society of Industrial and Organizational Psychology. Although they have roots at both the University of Illinois and Purdue University, Dan and Neal have been pillars of the Psychology and Management Departments at Michigan State University for more than a quarter of a century, and together they have contributed to this field directly in terms of their own research and teaching and also indirectly in their professional roles as editors and mentors. This book is a testament to these two individuals. It serves as a snapshot of where the field of work psychology is today and demonstrates how this current picture has been influenced by these two preeminent scholars. In this book, we attempt to describe the current state of the field of work psychology. Some of this work, like the work of Dan and Neal, focuses on topics such as motivation, teams, and personnel selection and measurement. However, as mentors, Dan and Neal never tried to "clone" themselves through their students or limit their collaborations with other faculty. Their encouragement to students to pursue their own passions has resulted in a legacy that spans the entire scope of work psychology. The impetus for this book was a conference held in honor of Dan and Neal at Michigan State University at a time when both were transitioning into official retirement. The conference presenters and contributors to this volume are all major forces within their own area of work psychology and have been influenced by (as students) or collaborated (other faculty) with Dan and Neal. We hope that our readers, especially those who were perhaps not students (or students of students) of Dan's and Neal's, will learn and draw inspiration from this book, as we all continue to pursue careers that are dedicated to the advancement of knowledge in the diverse field of work psychology"--Preface.
