520 |a "This book, addresses the current state of knowledge on the treatment of sexual offenders and the issues that must be targeted for treatment to be effective. A consideration of this extensive information, as well as our own clinical experience, has led us to develop an approach to treating these offenders. Whereas most offender treatment approaches take an aggressive, confrontational approach that emphasizes admitting guilt, our approach emphasizes warmth, empathy, and support for the offenders--what we refer to as a positive approach. Obviously, the goal of this approach is not to condone sex offending; to the contrary, the goal is to prevent sex offenders from reoffending. Not only do we believe that this approach is most effective for changing offending behavior, but research also supports this conclusion. The purpose of this book is to present a unified theoretical framework, drawing from offender treatment and positive psychology literature, for treating sexual offenders. Specifically, we discuss the theory and research on sexual offender treatment, demonstrating the empirical support for a positive approach. We also describe in detail the features of three treatment programs for sexual offenders, which we developed and provide in Canadian prisons"--Introduction.
