Sumario:This unique volume contains selected works of Liberty Hyde Bailey (1858-1954), a scholar-essayist-naturalist who espoused a "biocentric worldview." The work presents what the editor calls a "comprehensive introduction to Bailey's thinking on agriculture, nature, community, and education," drawn from ten of Bailey's most popular published works. The 42 excerpts or full essays are organized under nine descriptors that lay out Bailey's inimitable observations and agri-environmental (nature-minded) philosophical perspective, one that stands in contrast to the contemporary anthropocentric view
The Bailey style is characterized as following the tradition of Emerson, Burroughs, and Muir. From it, one acquires a clear sense of Bailey's emotive and observational sensibilities. In the group of excerpts presented under the editor's designation as "Appreciations," which include "Apple Tree," "Wind," "Weed," "Evening," and "Morning," Bailey reveals his revolutionary but uncomplicated thinking. Few contemporary writers remind the reader in such reflective rhetoric of the simple--yet provocative--ecological meaning of the commonplace phenomena that surround us. These characteristics and Bailey's expository prose provide this work with its most poignant and essential contribution. The book jacket presents two photos of Bailey, whose wisdom will be valuable for a wide readership. Copyright 2009 American Library Association
