Sumario:China has been a challenge to Christianity since the beginning of modern times and it remains so today. Here is a great civilisation comprising a quarter of humankind, yet largely untouched by Christian values and beliefs. Any theological evaluation of the state of world Christianity that does not take China into account is impoverished and radically incomplete. The contents of this issue have inevitably but not intentionally a Catholic bias since the editor is a historian of the Catholic Church in China, but much of the discussion is applicable to the wider Chinese Christian church. Justin Tan's contribution to this issue discusses divisions in the Protestant churches similar to and deriving from much the same forces as the divisions in the Chinese Catholic Church. Despite the Chinese government's divisive tactic of regarding the Tianzhu Jiao (Catholicism) administratively as a totally different religion from the Jidu Jiao (Protestant Christianity), there are signs of ecumenical rapprochement at the local and national levels.
