520 |a In a series of 221 short theses or aphorisms, the author sets forh his theory that authentic social life in modern society has been replaced with its representation. This "spectacle" is an inverted image of society in which relations between commodities have supplanted relations between people, making human perceptions less authentic and hindering critical thought. The Society of the Spectacle is a critique of contemporary consumer culture and commodity fetishism, dealing with issues such as class alienation, cultural homogenization, and mass media. Debord also draws an equivalence between the role of mass media marketing in the present and the role of religions in the past. Debord's aim and proposal is "to wake up the spectator who has been drugged by spectacular images ... through radical action in the form of the construction of situations ... situations that bring a revolutionary reordering of life, politics, and art".
520 1 |a "Few works of political and cultural theory have been as enduringly provocative as Guy Debord's The Society of the Spectacle. From its publication amid the social upheavals of the 1960s up to the present, the volatile theses of this book have decisively transformed debates on the shape of modernity, capitalism and everyday life in the late twentieth century. Now finally available in a superb English translation approved by the author, Debord's text remains as crucial as ever for understanding the contemporary effects of power, which are increasingly inseparable from the new virtual worlds of our rapidly changing image/information culture."--Jacket
