Cuneiform manuscripts of ritual instructions, incantation texts and repellent recipes, which served as reference and training texts for the 'conjurer', were found during excavations of ancient Near Eastern libraries. In this volume, 66 mostly previously unpublished texts of this genre, which were found during the excavations of the German Orient Society in the Assyrian capital of Assur, are published in edited versions and copies; the duplicate texts from other localities are also taken into account. The tablets and fragments come mainly from the 'House of the Summoning Priest', one of the most important locations for the corpus of defensive magic rituals. The introduction gives an overview of the genre of Babylonian-Assyrian defensive magic texts and introduces the phenomenon of the belief in harmful magic in ancient Mesopotamia. | ||
