Although an important early contributor to the May Fourth New Culture movement, Zhou soon became radically at odds with many of his contemporaries and came to oppose much in their constructions of nation and modernity. The author demonstrates that Zhou, through his literary and aesthetic practice as an essayist, espoused ways of constructing the individual that affirmed the individual's importance in opposition to the normative national subject of most May Fourth reformers."--Jacket
