|a "As many as 70% of primary care visits in the United States are related to behavioral health needs. Many common medical problems encountered in primary care involve poor health care habits that may initiate or exacerbate symptoms and poor functioning. Unfortunately, the conventional model of psychological assessment and intervention is not well suited to the fast pace and complexity of the primary setting. Furthermore, health care providers often lack the time and/or training to help patients manage these problems in evidence-based ways beyond medication prescriptions. The authors draw on research evidence and years of experience to provide practical guidance for health care practitioners, especially behavioral health care providers, who wish to work more effectively in the demanding setting of integrated primary care. Each chapter includes practical tips for successfully integrating behavioral health services into the primary care system, along with discussions of traps to avoid. The book includes an array of assessment questions, patient handouts, and sample scripts to help clinicians enhance their assessment and intervention skills in a manner that leads to the more effective, focused interactions that work well within the context of primary care. Each chapter applies the 5A's model of assessment and interventionassess, advise, agree, assist, and arrangeto specific clinical topics: generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, depression, tobacco use, weight issues, sleep problems, diabetes, asthma, irritable bowel syndrome, cardiovascular disorders, pain disorders, sexual problems, and "health anxiety." Special chapters cover cultural competency, concerns for older adults, women's health, and health anxiety. The strategies detailed in this comprehensive book will be of use to a range of clinicians, including psychologists and social workers, family physicians, physician assistants, nurses, and health care educators"--Jacket.
