Sumario:Nunavik is the first Inuit-controlled school district in Canada. This book offers a history of the development of self-government in education in Arctic Quebec, from the arrival of the first traders and missionaries in the mid-nineteenth century up to the creation of the Kativik School Board and its evaluation in the 1990s. It brings together Native and non-Native perspectives on education in northern Quebec and takes a detailed look at the debate about the purposes, achievements, and failures of public schools in Native communities in the North. Sources include interviews with Inuit elders and children who have attended different school systems throughout the history of public school in this area. Non-Inuits were also interviewed as residents of the communities, parents, teachers, administrators, and consultants. The book offers a unique view into contemporary Inuit society with historical colour and black-and-white photographs.
