Sumario:In this award-winning book ('Provincial Prize for Historical Research 2006', of the province of Flemish Brabant) the developments that followed the split of the Leuven bilingual university are mapped in a masterly way. In 1968, a regime of authoritarian monsignors and status-sensitive professors was buried. In the euphoria of autonomy, the new, Dutch-language university opted for the flight ahead. But in the mid-1970s, the revolutionary momentum gave way to feelings of disenchantment. This only came to an end in the mid-1980s. The university was then, as it were, 'reinvented'. The research was professionalised, education broadened, contacts with society emphasized. Since then, the horizon has become wider and wider. The city on the mountain tells the story of the struggle for independence, of contestation and commercialization, of science and engagement in a compelling way. The book is highly recommended for anyone who wants to learn more about Leuven University and its community of professors and students, as well as lab technicians, librarians and technicians.
