Sumario:What are the criteria for identifying when alcohol consumption has become problematic? Do the biomedical criteria that define alcohol dependence as a pathology apply to all cultural contexts? Alcohol use is a matter of complex contours, especially when considering Indigenous peoples, among which problems related to alcohol use appear as important public health problems, although national academic production on the subject is still relatively scarce. As alcohol acquires a variety of functions in different social groups, the analysis cannot be restricted to the consumption of the drink itself: it is necessary to relate consumption to sociocultural and political-economic processes. This is what the authors of this collection defend, which describe and analyze the specific characteristics of the different ways of using alcohol in different Brazilian Indigenous peoples. The chapters bring theoretical, ethnographic, historiographic and culturally oriented intervention reports. They seek to overcome approaches limited to the pathological aspects of alcohol consumption: they demonstrate that the effects of drinking - whether negative or positive - cannot be dissociated from its social, economic and psychological aspects. This complexity points to the necessary complementarity between the perspectives of biomedicine and those of the social sciences, in addition to confirming the importance of the Indigenous role in dealing with problems related to the use of alcoholic beverages.
