Sumario:The work offers the first comprehensive, empirically based religious historiography of the Jewish communities in China and Hong Kong after the Cultural Revolution. Numerous synagogues are being built, Jewish religious life is becoming more plural and particular than ever before, despite Chinese caution towards foreign religions and historical events such as the handover of Hong Kong to the People's Republic of China. At the same time, the work is also the first religious studies study of religion and expatriates, m.a.W. with religion under the conditions of short-term migration not geared towards integration. The listed religious transformations prove that the religious attitude of people from far away develops a dynamic of its own and does not only change as a side effect in the process of pursuing other goals such as integration or the fight for state recognition. The results also shed new light on diaspora-related processes in general and extend classic concepts such as 'homeland' or 'diasporic consciousness'.
