Over the course of the ensuing eight decades, the Musha Incident has been repeatedly appropriated by different political regimes in Taiwan for various political purposes. Under the Japanese it was often used to attest to the "barbarity" of Taiwan's indigenous tribes; the Nationalist regime cited the uprising as proof of the Taiwanese peoples' heroism and solidarity with the Chinese in resisting the Japanese; and pro-independence groups in Taiwan have sought to use the Seediq people and their history as a means of highlighting Taiwan's unique and "authentic" cultural tradition, which stands apart from that of mainland China.
