|a Why did we write a book on mobile health (mHealth)? Because we believe it is an essential tool in the disruptive trans formation required to change our healthcare system from one that is driven by volume to one that is sustained on value. Although medicine, with its powerful imaging machines, robotic surgeons, and electronic monitors and devices, is one of the most technology -heavy industries in the world, it lags far behind most other industries when it comes to harnessing the power of information technology. This is particularly true when it comes to using that technology to enhance the patient experience, track and improve quality, and manage and reduce costs. Our work on this book convinces us that coupling mHealth to the twin engines of electronic health records and healthcare reform is vital if we are to experience the kind of fundamental changes in healthcare delivery required in the United States.
