Sumario: | "Following the ratification of the Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons, Especially Women and Children, supplementing the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime, in 2003, many countries have introduced new or improved existing legislative provisions to tackle the crime of trafficking in persons more effectively. For example, trafficking in persons is now a specific offense in many countries, at least for its most common purposes, namely sexual exploitation and forced labour. The criminal justice response to these recent improvements is harder to measure, however. This is partly because several defining characteristics of trafficking in persons are difficult to prove in court, but also because countries may prosecute this crime as a range of different offenses. International comparisons are also challenging, not only due to large data gaps, but also because existing data are often not comparable across jurisdictions. Nonetheless, the present article provides a broad overview of country-level responses to human trafficking, starting with global and regional overviews, followed by a special focus on Europe--the continent with the most diversity in the origins of detected victims--and finally country profiles of 155 countries and territories worldwide."--Publisher's description |
