It brings to light new information about this man who joined the Hudson's Bay Company when he was just eighteen and went on to build first the Saint Paul, Minneapolis and Manitoba Railway (which opened the Canadian Northwest to settlement) then the nation-building Canadian Pacific Railway. In 1896, Donald Smith became Canada's High Commissioner in London and was soon elevated to the peerage." "Railways made Lord Strathcona a rich man, and the became a generous benefactor to such institutions as the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal, Royal Victoria College at McGill, the University of Manitoba and Victoria's Royal Jubilee Hospital.
