Sumario: | "Can a skeptical way of life be a politically responsible life?" asks Hiley (U. of New Hampshire), believing that the affirmative answer to this philosophical question contains significant implications for the nature of democracy. He suggests that democracy and doubt can go together, but are best fit within the context of deliberative democracy, as opposed to liberalism or communitarianism. In making his case, he uses case studies of Socrates, Montaigne, and Rousseau to illustrate the qualities of doubt valuable for deliberative democracy. In the final chapter he takes up the topic of doubt and democratic education. Annotation #169;2006 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com). |
