Sumario:Rescuing the Children is the memoir of Vivette Samuel, who at age twenty-two began working for the Œuvre de secours aux enfants (OSE, or Society for Assistance to Children). One out of four of the Jews in France at the time of the German invasion died during the war, but the fatality rate for Jewish children was almost half that--in large part because saving children was the primary focus of the OSE and their allies. The stories of peasants and villagers, both Catholics and Protestants, hiding large numbers of Jewish children, have been described in books and documentary films. This book details the efforts taken by French Jews, at tremendous personal risk, to support Jewish families in camps such as the notorious Rivesaltes, and win the release of the children, to hide Jewish children from the authorities, and to smuggle Jewish children across the borders into neutral Switzerland and Spain. The OSE and similar organizations saved 86 percent of Jewish children in France from deportation to Nazi concentration and extermination camps.
