Sumario:Larsson (Tibetan Buddhism, U. of California-Berkeley) explores how Sangyé Gyaltsen (1452-1507) became the Madman of Tsang, Tsangnyön Heruka, and summarizes his subsequent activities as a mad yogin. He also places the figure of the mad yogin historically and geographically. His main sources are life stories of Tsangnyön in Tibetan, many of which have not been studied in the West nor translated into any other language. He discusses his birth and childhood, the exceptional monk, the birth of a Heruka, the mad yogin, a mad yogin turns the wheel of dharma, Tsangnyön Heruka and Tantric Buddhism, Tsangnyön's own works, and some key figures and texts. The study is based on his 2009 doctoral dissertation at the University of Stockholm. Annotation ©2013 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com).
