Sumario:Antonio Machado (1875-1939) is one of Spain's most original and renowned twentieth-century poets and thinkers. In The Poetics of Otherness in Antonio Machado's "Proverbios y cantares," Nicolás Fernández-Medina shows how Machado's poetry and philosophy combine in the folkloric poetry of the "Proverbios y cantares" to critique Spain's cultural milieu during the first decades of the twentieth century. More specifically, Fernández-Medina shows how the "Proverbios y cantares" reveal an important aspect of the poet's concept of Other.
