520 | |a Ask practically any academic department chair why they do not have more African Americans among its faculty members and they generally respond with stock stories or folktales, which stimulated the title of this volume, Beyond Stock Stories and Folktales . Stock stories are akin to grand narratives that explain ''why things are'' in ways that satisfy those in dominant positions. We argue it is time to move beyond stock stories. The purpose of the book is to provide historical, conceptual, and empirically based analyses focused on the development of African Americans in STEM fields. There is rarely any real understanding of the uneven contours of the education pipeline as well as the transition to and within academic life experienced by African Americans in STEM fields. This is true for those who have succeeded in STEM fields and for those who are in transition, as well those who were not successful. The fact is that there are many educational and psychosocial factors that influence African Americans in schools and society as well as affect their movements into STEM fields both as students and professionals. A more specific aim of this volume is to examine the developmental trajectory and factors related to or intervening on the educational and social mobility of African Americans in STEM fields. These examinations will be based on sound empirical evidence provided by a group of insightful authors who contributed to this volume. Through the contributing authors, this volume will provide information and shed light on opportunities to advance African American attainment in STEM fields and disciplines throughout the academic and professional spectra, and the mitigation of disparities that continue to be so prevalent. The editors of this volume hope is that it will generate discussions and actions that are based on empirical evidence and policy analyses, rather than long standing stock stories and folktales that misrepresent the paths linked to African Americans' attainment in STEM fields. | ||
