Mats Lundahl analyses Haiti's plight from a historical perspective, and investigates the central mechanisms that create underdevelopment in Haiti, notably the interplay between economic and political factors. He provides an account of the failed transition from a predatory state to a developing economy, focussing on the reform attempts and economic policy. The book goes on to address Haiti's current crisis, and the problem of future reconstruction over the next decades, and whether the rescue effort can succeed.
