Gluckel's aim in writing the memoir was to survive the long nights that tormented her after the death of her beloved husband, and to record a family history of her 12 children. The Life of Gluckel of Hameln is the only English translation of Gluckel's sory from the original Yiddish. Widely regarded as the most accurate and complete translation available, it was out of print for many years until this reissue by JPS. Beth-Zion Abrahams, a British scholar, also wrote numerous scholary articles on English Jewry and Jewish authors. | |
