|a It is impossible to imagine ophthalmology today without lasers, so ubiquitously and thoroughly do they dominate the field. Just 25 years ago, virtually all of what we rely upon today was in its infancy. Not only were lasers new on the scene, but also computers, intraocular lenses, and microsurgical instrumentation. Intracapsular cataract extraction was the standard, and ocular imaging devices, gene therapy, and stem cells had not yet even been conceptualized. A rapid explosion of argon laser techniques occurred in the late 1970s and early 1980s, and during this time, laser iridotomy, periphera.
