Sumario:"In this book Malcolm Heath undertakes a fundamental reassessment of Menander of Laodicea ('Menander Rhetor'), and of the nature and functions of rhetoric in later antiquity (second to fifth centuries A.D.). He examines in detail Menander's fragments, collected here for the first time, and shows that he was primarily an expert on judicial and deliberative oratory; a source-critical analysis of the Demosthenes scholia demonstrates that his influential commentary on Demosthenes can be partially reconstructed. Heath explores the educational practices of the rhetorical schools, and shows that, contrary to scholars who argue that rhetorical techniques increasingly lost their practical relevance under the Roman Empire, the skills which the rhetoricians taught still had a direct application in their pupils' subsequent careers."--Jacket.
