Sumario:"This book can claim to be the first attempt within a small compass to provide a version of the main events of nineteenth century European politics and diplomacy which, in its recording of the facts and in its interpretation of them, is in the best sense of the phrase, "up to date". It has long been a commonplace fact that history books tend, perhaps out of necessity, to be a generation out of date in their facts; while the gap between history that professional historians know and the legendary versions of it that make up the common reader's view of it is wider still. This book attempts to bridge these gaps. It seeks to provide a more modern version of the facts than is contained in many even f the large textbooks used by students; and at the same time, because of its readable style, it is eminently suited to the needs of the general reader. Not only recent historical research, but also the mere passage of time has made many established notions about the nineteenth century no longer tenable. This book challenges these older interpretations, and in doing so seeks to stimulate fresh thought by the vigour and liveliness of its style no less than by its assured grasp of the facts". - Publisher.
