520 | |a In a delightful follow-up to A Medieval Storybook, Professor Bishop presents nineteen Greek and Roman tales, all selected for their excellence as stories. There are tales of adventures by land and sea, of love and its betrayal, of battle and feasts, of prodigies wrought by gods and goals pursued by men. Some of the stories are tragic, others comic; some are realistic, others based on the fantasy. Included are the first account of a trip to the moon and the first narratives to develop the now familiar formula of boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy seeks girl, boy finds girl.Among the Greek authors are Homer, Herodotus, and Lucian; among the Romans are Virgil, Ovid, Apuleius, and Petronius. The translations from Latin are by Professor Bishop. As in A Medieval Storybook, the drawings by Alison Mason Kingsbury greatly enhance the charm of her husband's latest book. | ||
