Auch die internationale Schuldenkrise, der sowjetische Rückzug aus Afghanistan sowie die Beziehungen zu Syrien und Iran forderten die Bonner Diplomatie.

At the same time, the remaining East bloc states, especially the USSR, were moving politically and economically toward the West. The international debt crisis, Soviet withdrawal from Afghanistan, and relations with Syria and Iran all challenged Bonn's diplomacy.
