Sumario:In this paper an attempt is made to assess the scope for the use of macroeconomic policy to reduce unemployment in western Europe. We beging with a summary of the principal facts about the behaviour of unemployment over time, comparing western Europe with the United States and Japan. That there is a link between inflation and unemployment is universally agreed, though there is by no means agreemen about the nature of that link. But, it is clearly desirable to provide a brief summary of the facts about inflation: this is provided in section 1.
